Sadaqah al-fitr (Fitrana) for Muslims

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Sadqa-e-Fitar, also known as Zakat al-Fitr, is a form of obligatory charity given by Muslims at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, just before the festival of Eid al-Fitr. It is meant to purify the fast and help those in need to partake in the joyous occasion of Eid.

Sadqa-e-Fitar is typically given in the form of staple food items, such as wheat, barley, dates, raisins, rice, or money equivalent to the cost of these items. The amount of Sadqa-e-Fitar is calculated per person in the household, including children and the elderly, and is based on the market value of the staple food items in the local area. It is usually a small amount that is affordable for most Muslims.

The purpose of Sadqa-e-Fitar is to purify the person who has fasted from any shortcomings or indecent acts during the month of Ramadan, and to help those who are less fortunate to partake in the joy of Eid celebrations. It is also a means of expressing gratitude to Allah for His blessings and a way to promote social solidarity and compassion within the community by caring for the needy.

It is important to give Sadqa-e-Fitar before the day of Eid, preferably before the day of Eid prayer, so that those in need can benefit from it in time. It can be given directly to the deserving recipients or through trusted charitable organizations or mosques that distribute it to those in need. It is recommended to give Sadqa-e-Fitar locally to support the needy in your community, but it can also be given to those in need in other parts of the world.

Giving Sadqa-e-Fitar is considered a virtuous act in Islam and is obligatory for those who are eligible to pay it. It is a way to purify oneself and show compassion towards others, as well as foster a sense of community and social welfare.
